Genetic modification under debate in the CICAE–UCJC League

The VII Pre-University Debate League CICAE – UCJC has celebrated at the Arturo Soria School its first qualifying tournament on November 25 and 26. Around 300 students debated whether the rapid progress made in recent years in the possibility of genetic modification.

Since October, participants have received debate training The project aims to promote skills such as critical thinking, the search for truthful information, analysis, public speaking and argumentation skills. In this line, the students have to prepare the topic to be debated with positions for and against, because seconds before each confrontation, a draw is made as to who will defend one or the other. This helps to stimulate broad-mindedness in the face of any current issue and respect for opposing ideas.

Each year, new schools join the CICAE – UCJC Debate League, which are committed to giving prominence to debate in their classrooms, and there are already close to 40 schools in the region. 40 educational centers from all over Spain are part of the initiative. Students from 3rd ESO to 2nd Baccalaureate participate in each tournament and can do so in Spanish or English, as both types of competition are held simultaneously.

In this first tournament, teams from the following schools were victorious SEK International School Ciudalcampo and Colegio Salliver, in English and Spanish, respectively. Alba Borrego (Brains International School La Moraleja), Patricia Herraiz (Los Sauces Torrelodones) and Carla Iglesias (Colegio Virgen de Europa) won the title of best speakers of the tournament.

The seventh edition of the CICAE – UCJC Pre-University Debate League has the collaboration of aulaPlaneta, Alkora, Mc Yadra, Trinity College of London and Train&Talk.
