Discover PortAventura EcoEduca: for a more sustainable future

A didactic program with new workshops on sustainability and social responsibility for elementary school students

EcoEduca is one of the various social responsibility actions carried out by PortAventura World and its objective is to complement the curriculum taught during the primary school period on sustainable development with interactive 50-minute workshops. These workshops, which combine theory and practice, are not only focused on raising awareness, but also on providing tools and proposing concrete solutions to act today for what we want tomorrow.

In the Biodiversity Workshop, set in the stunning aviary of the Makamanu Garden in Polynesia, a specialised biologist introduces students to the exotic birds featured in PortAventura Park’s “Birds of Paradise” show. The workshop explains their origin and behaviour, as well as the importance of protecting species diversity, the value of their habitats, and the various plant species present, along with their morphology.

In the Zero Waste workshop, which takes place on the Polynesia beach, an explorer tells the Maori legend of the island of Maui, where natural resources were considered sacred, so they only used what they needed. This PortAventura workshop teaches how to make a sustainable use of materials to approach a circular economy: from obtaining raw materials and resources, to reducing waste, reusing materials and recycling. A space for reflection on the environmental impact of waste, with concrete proposals to stop generating it.

A school contest to educate

In line with sustainability and actions for a responsible future, we present the school competition Make Your World More Sustainable by PortAventura World—an environmental awareness initiative aimed at pupils in Primary Education (Years 5–6) and Lower Secondary Education (Years 7–8; 1º–2º ESO) in schools across the country.

Through a virtual journey through the different worlds of the park and with the help of the two sibling explorers Isabella and Chester Cook, students will be able to discover the environmental challenges for which innovative solutions are being sought, with real impact on each center and their immediate environment.

Different program resources are offered, such as the Interactive Guide for students, where they will find explanatory videos of the 5 challenges, activities to investigate them, and recommendations to develop their group project, or the Teacher’s Guide, with proposals for activities to work on the SDGs and the challenges with the group.

For each of the 5 environmental challenges proposed, the jury will choose a winning group from among the best proposals received.

As a prize, the students in the winning group, accompanied by two teachers, will enjoy a full stay at PortAventura World for a weekend in May 2023. During the visit to the park, they will also be able to take part in one of the EcoEduca educational workshops.

In addition, the ideas of the participating students will be converted into actions with a real environmental impact on their surroundings. For this reason, the schools of the winning groups will receive an economic prize to finance the implementation of their students’ initiative.

A real challenge, where students and their teachers will be able to join their ideas in a very ambitious project with results applicable to their surroundings and extendable to a better future.
